What is rendering?

“Rendering” is somewhat of a buzzword in home improvement and construction circles, but what exactly is it? Rendering describes the process of applying a specialised coating or plaster to the exterior walls of a property. There are several types available, all of which are designed to act as a protective layer and can shield your home against adverse weather conditions, external damage, wear and tear and more. Our professional team are highly skilled in all areas of rendering, plastering and dry-lining. We have been praised for the speed of application, the level of cleanliness maintained by our team, and the high standard of finish left on completion. Our team are also skilled in the use of stilts and has all of the relevant permits for MEWPS, (scissor lifts and cherry pickers etc).

Types of Rendering & How They’re Used

We are a well-established company and offer rendering, plastering and dry-lining services for every type of domestic and commercial property. We have extensive knowledge of the rendering industry including many modern and traditional practices. There are a range of types of rendering available to suit several requirements. Here are just some of the options that we offer…

  • Traditional Rendering

Traditional rendering typically includes cement-based renders which are often mixed on-site and applied manually. This method is highly versatile and can be used on a range of surfaces including brick, concrete and more to provide a smooth finish.

  • Lime Rendering

Lime rendering is a traditional technique that uses a lime-based mortar. This technique is typically suited to the exteriors of historic or listed buildings as it delivers fantastic breathability as well as a durable finish that supports natural movement in the structure.

  • Monocouche Rendering

This innovative, one-coat rendering system provides a weatherproof and decorative finish for a range of properties. As well as being highly durable and crack-resistant, it is also available in a huge choice of colours and textures for complete customisation.

  • Weber, Parex & K-Rend

These popular brands provide coloured render systems, allowing for tailored results that suit your design preferences. Weber, Parex, and K-Rend are most suited to external walls as they are durable and low-maintenance.

  • Silicone Rendering

Silicone rendering is favoured among many homeowners for its water-repellent properties and long-lasting durability. Silicone rendering delivers excellent weather resistance and superior breathability, therefore protecting against the risk of damp and mould growth.

If you’re not sure which type of rendering you need for your home, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Hickey Ltd today. We’re happy to help and can provide trusted recommendations.

The Benefits of Rendering Your Home

At Hickey Ltd, we have seen our clients enjoy the benefits of our rendering services first-hand. Here’s why our rendering solutions are so popular among many homeowners…

  • Protection Against Moisture

Rendering can help to keep your home dry, while at the same time allowing the fabric of the building to breathe. Whether you need Lime or Silicone rendering, you can be assured that your home will be protected against water ingress and that the structural integrity of your home will remain robust and reliable.

  • Versatility

Our rendering services and methods are highly versatile, allowing for customisation to suit your home or property. Modern systems of rendering include the very popular Monocouche renders. These are through-coloured renders that maintain their colour for many years, negating the need for future painting.

  • Long-Lasting & Safe Results

Although spray-applied modern silicone coatings offer a faster and cheaper finish, they can hide damaged and deteriorating brickwork behind. When this eventually becomes apparent, the damage to the brickwork can be beyond repair and will need to be replaced, at far greater expense. Our rendering solutions are long-lasting, safe and reliable.

  • Thermal Efficiency

Modern rendering systems, such as our Monocouche renders, can enhance the insulation properties of your house, leading to reduced energy consumption and lower utility bills. Our methods not only bring the exterior of your home into the 21st century but also add to the thermal value of your home.

  • Enhanced Aesthetic Appearance

We use premium quality rendering products, applied precisely by rendering specialists. This means that you can infuse your home with a fresh and uniform exterior appearance. Our rendering solutions not only boost your home’s kerb appeal but could potentially increase its resale value should you be thinking about selling.

  • Long-Term Cost Savings

While you will be required to pay out for rendering initially, this cost is minimal compared to the expenses you may face without it. Without rendering, your home’s exterior will be exposed to the elements and may incur damage. Rendering protects your home with a robust coating that will see the need for frequent repairs become a thing of the past.

If you’re ready to see the benefits that rendering can deliver to your home for yourself, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Hickey Ltd today for more information.

Our Rendering Case Studies

We have extensive knowledge of the rendering industry and are up to date with many modern practices, as well as the traditional aspects. We have worked with English Heritage on several traditional lime rendering projects, and we have sent teams of plasterers to the Ty Mawr Training School in Wales to be taught traditional lime render application and upkeep. Please see the barn conversion photographs in our Project’s Portfolio. This building in Berkhamsted was grade 2 listed, and was fully lime rendered by our team, to the satisfaction of English Heritage.

We keep up with modern trends such as Monocouche renders. This incredibly popular rendering system is growing fast. Applied correctly, this will not require painting for up to 20 years and is backed by the manufacturer’s guarantee. There is a huge array of colours available as standard, with most being available at short notice. We use all of the major manufacturers, including Weber, Parex and K rend. One of our recent projects has involved removing the tile-clad facades of a house, replacing this with a cement-based panel, and then applying a Monocouche render finish. This immediately brought the house into 2021 and brightened up the whole building.

We can also install silicone-based versions of the same products. This is a thin coat of render used over external insulation systems and is being used extensively to clad older homes. This will help to keep the home warmer for longer and to bring down the heating bills.
